Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Quantock Funeral Directors
At Quantock Funeral Directors, we understand that planning a funeral can raise many questions, particularly during such a difficult and emotional time. To help make things clearer, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to guide you through the process.
1. What should I do when someone passes away?
When a loved one passes away, the steps you need to take will depend on the circumstances. If the death occurs at home or at a nursing home, a doctor will need to confirm the death. You can contact us at Quantock Funeral Directors, and we will guide you through the next steps, including the collection and care of your loved one. If the death occurs in a hospital, you can contact us immediately, and tell the bereavement office at the hospital that its us you wish to use, but it will be a few days before the hospital allow us to take your loved one into our care. They will contact us as soon as we are able to do so.
2. How soon do I need to start planning the funeral?
There is no need to rush. You will need to register the death, which should be done within five days if possible. We can hand your details to the registrar which will save you from having to call them, they will call you instead. But we can start to plan the funeral as soon as you would like to. We will work with you to ensure the timing suits your family’s needs and circumstances.
3. Can I arrange a funeral before the death is registered?
Yes, you can begin discussing arrangements with us before the death is officially registered. However, the funeral itself cannot take place until the registration is complete.
4. What options are available for funerals?
At Quantock Funeral Directors, we offer a range of funeral options, including:
Traditional funerals: These typically involve a religious or non-religious service, followed by burial or cremation.
Cremation services: These can be formal or informal, with the option for a memorial service or the scattering of ashes.
Green funerals: Environmentally-friendly funerals, which may include natural burials and eco-friendly coffins.
Un-attended funerals: We will carry out the funeral without any family present and deliver the ashes back to you.
We will work closely with you to create a service that reflects the wishes and personality of your loved one.
5. How much does a funeral cost?
The cost of a funeral can depend on several factors, such as the type of service, whether you choose burial or cremation, and any additional elements such as flowers, music, or memorials, often with an end bill being different to what you thought it would be..
At Quantock Funeral Directors, we are committed to transparent pricing, so we offer a range of all-inclusive packages to suit different budgets and will work with you to create a fitting service within your financial means. This way there are no hidden costs added to the final bill.
Our un-attended funerals are £1,250, up to our full traditional services priced at £3,350.
6. Can the funeral service be personalised?
Yes, we encourage personalisation to make the funeral a meaningful reflection of your loved one’s life. Personalisation options can include:
Music and readings that were important to the deceased.
Eulogies delivered by family or friends.
Photo displays or video tributes.
Unique floral arrangements.
Personalised coffins or urns.
We are here to listen to your ideas and ensure that the service feels unique and fitting.
7. What is the difference between a burial and a cremation?
The primary difference is the final resting place. With a burial, the body is laid to rest in a grave, and a headstone or memorial can be placed at the site. In a cremation, the body is cremated, and the ashes can be kept in an urn, scattered at a chosen location, or interred in a garden of remembrance.
Both options allow for a range of service styles, and we can help you decide which is right for your family, based on personal, religious, or financial preferences.
8. Can the funeral be held somewhere other than a church or crematorium?
Yes, funeral services can be held in a variety of locations, including:
Your home or garden
Community halls
Outdoor locations, such as parks or natural beauty spots
We can assist with the logistical arrangements for your chosen location, ensuring the service runs smoothly.
9. How do I register a death?
There is a dedicated page on our website to explain in detail how to register a death.
10. What is a wake, and do I need to hold one?
A wake is a gathering of family and friends, typically held after the funeral service, where people come together to offer condolences and share memories. A wake can be as formal or informal as you wish, and while it is a common tradition, it is not required. If you choose to hold one, we can help with arrangements, such as finding a venue or organising catering.
11. Can you assist with repatriation if my loved one passed away abroad?
Yes, we provide repatriation services to bring your loved one back to the UK, or to send them to another country. We are experienced in handling all necessary paperwork, including liaising with consulates and arranging transport, to ensure your loved one’s return is handled with dignity and care.
12. What support is available after the funeral?
We understand that grief doesn’t end with the funeral, and we are committed to providing ongoing support. We can connect you with local bereavement counselling services and support groups to help you cope with your loss. Whether you need advice on memorial options or simply someone to talk to, we are here to assist you.
